Overview

Decisions about when the Oliver Mansion will be reopened for tours have yet to be made, with hope to keep visitors and docents safe. Likewise, the reopening date for Kidsfirst Children's Museum is not known at this time. The History Museum's mission is to collect, preserve, interpret, exhibit and teach the heritage of the St. Joseph River Valley region. First organized in 1867, The History Museum is the second oldest historical society in Indiana. The site includes: The Oliver Mansion or Copshaholm, the 38-room mansion that was once home to local industrialist J.D. Oliver Worker’s Home, reflecting a Polish immigrant family in the 1930s. It is also the repository for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League collection which includes photographs, programs, film footage, scrapbooks and playing equipment used by the teams. Individuals and institutions from across the country turn to The History Museum for research and information on the AAGPBL. The History Museum will also serve as the only stop in Indiana or Michigan for the touring exhibit Dressing Downton: Changing Fashion for Changing Times, which features 36 costumes and accessories worn during the first four seasons of the hit show Downton Abbey. The History Museum is adjacent to the Studebaker National Museum.
