Tourism’s Impact on the Local Economy
A new semi-annual study conducted by Certec, Inc. and commissioned by Visit South Bend Mishawaka has found that tourism accounts for over $551.5 million contributed to our local economy. Roughly 7,180 jobs in St. Joseph County are directly related to tourism, with over one-third being “high wage” positions.

There is no doubt the University of Notre Dame has a great influence in drawing visitors to the area, and thus on visitor spending as well. According to a study conducted by the University, $14.7 million is spent by visiting fans each of the six football games each fall. The study also found that the University of Notre Dame’s total impact on the local economy totals $1.302 billion annually.
