Many cities in America are switching their focus over to appealing to an energetic class of creative individuals. In 2016, SmartAsset, a personal finance technology company, ranked cities based on the concentration of creatives within the population as well as the cost of living. South Bend came in ranked No. 4.
South Bend was once a town of industry with Studebaker and Oliver Chilled Plow Works serving as the backbone to the city for many years. Fast forward to present-day, South Bend has now seen a transition with more and more creatives calling South Bend home. According to SmartAsset’s study, South Bend has 78 creatives per every 10,000 individuals and the cost of living is 89 percent of the national average.
From multiple art galleries, including the South Bend Museum of Art and the Snite Museum of Art, to music from local artists filling the air in the summers, the presence of those creative individuals in South Bend is certainly alive.
The Hoffman Hotel Apartments in downtown South Bend recently opened and now provides housing for artists solely—from painters and sculptors to musicians. Sound proof music rooms allows musicians to practice without disturbing other residents. There are also gallery and performance rooms for residents to showcase their art.
SmartAsset utilized data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) for their research.
