Drive into any town across America, and you will see countless diners claiming they have the “best burger” in the area. There can really only be one best in any given community, and you will find the best burger in all of northern Indiana right here in South Bend. The View Tavern, a 21-and-over establishment in downtown South Bend, recently took home the coveted title after a seven-county wide bracket competition this summer! The bracket competition, known as the Northern Indiana Burger Wars, was brought to life by the Northern Indiana Tourism Development Commission (NITDC) and the organization’s seven member counties – St. Joseph, Marshall, Kosciusko, Elkhart, Porter, LaPorte and Shipshewana. The best burger from each county was entered into the competition, then pitted against one another in bracket rounds until there was only one left standing.
The View’s standout burger, the Becky Burger, is named after the owner herself and features lots of gooey cheese and grilled onions. The cozy downtown tavern also offers build-your-own choices with more than a dozen toppings. The View has been a South Bend establishment since 1954, and has long been regarded as one of the best burger joints around, and now they have proof! The View’s general manager (and son of the owner), Ian Kollar, has said the competition has done great things for business. Their meat order from the local meat supplier Jaworski’s Market has doubled; they have had lines at dinnertime out the door; and it’s not just regulars coming in for the usual anymore! All that being said, Ian has continually attested their delicious, no-frills approach to burger making to the quality of super-fresh and locally-sourced meat they order from Jaworski’s throughout the week.So the next time you plan on indulging your burger craving, do yourself a favor and head to The View – I hear the Bloody Mary isn’t half bad either!
