For some, it’s just another Monday. It is Easter Monday for others. For South Bend, it is Dyngus Day, and we wouldn’t want it any other way!
South Bend Mishawaka’s large Polish-American population can be thanked for this unique celebration. Dyngus Day originated in Poland as a celebration of the March equinox. Because of the area’s Polish demographic, the event became popular in South Bend in the 1950s. Since then, The Bend has adopted Dyngus Day as a day-long celebration full of dancing, eating and drinking. Similar to how everyone celebrates St. Patrick’s Day even if they are not Irish, everyone celebrates Dyngus Day in South Bend Mishawaka. It has been said “everyone is Polish on Dyngus Day.”
Local facilities will be offering feasts of Polish sausage, noodles, potatoes, sweet and sour cabbage and more as families and friends gather to share a drink, enjoy each other’s company and experience the Polish tradition of polka music!
Mark your calendars! Dyngus Day will be on Monday, April 2, 2018.
