Hockey tilts don’t get more historic than this Original Six matchup between the Chicago Blackhawks and Boston Bruins, set for New Year’s Day at Notre Dame Stadium. Outdoor games are a staple in the NHL these days, but they’ve never visited such a historic college football stadium.

On top of this game, the Notre Dame hockey team will host rival Michigan on Jan. 5 in the same venue.

Game Day Details

  • Parking lots are scheduled to open at 7 a.m. Tuesday with gates to the stadium opening at 11 a.m.
  • Puck drop is slated for 1 p.m.
  • Parking passes are available in advance. Find more information at this link.
  • Notre Dame enforces a clear bag policy at the stadium. More details on that here.
  • Alcohol will be sold at concession stands for those 21 and over with identification. Sales will stop at the beginning of the third period.

New Year’s Eve Events in The Bend

Making your way to The Bend on New Year’s Eve? There’s going to be plenty going on around the area for those looking to ring in the new year.

Visiting Notre Dame’s campus

If you’re arriving early (or staying later), take the Winter Classic as an opportunity to explore Notre Dame’s campus. There are some landmarks you don’t want to miss.

Take the Train to the Classic

The South Shore Line, a commuter train from downtown Chicago to South Bend International Airport, is operating on a special schedule New Year’s Day to accommodate fans headed to the Winter Classic.

An extra eastbound train will depart Millennium Station in Chicago at 7:30 a.m. Central Time, arriving at Westmoor Street (an unlisted stop) at 9:42 a.m. CT. The NHL is providing shuttle service from the Westmoor Street location to the east side of campus on Twyckenham Drive.

For the return trip, buses will leave campus approximately 45 minutes after the game. They will stage near the drop off location and return passengers to Westmoor Street for an extra westbound train that will leave for Chicago around 5:15 p.m. CT (this is a tentative time subject to change depend on when the game ends).

Here’s a look at the full train schedule for Jan. 1 (subject to change):
