  • Located in the heart of downtown South Bend on the east side of the St. Joseph River at the South Bend dam, the East Race Waterway is a one-of-a-kind recreational facility offering safe but exciting fun for all ages. The first artificial white water course in North America, the Race is approximately 2,000 feet long with a total fall of about 12 feet depending on the flow of the river.  Fully trained lifeguarding staff on duty at all times. Bring your own kayak or enjoy one of their 4 to 6 person Funyaks. Requirements: rubber soled shoes with heel strap required and no sharp objects worn. Minimum height 54", under age 16 must be accompanied by adult. The banks of the East Race offer more than five miles of paved and lighted walking/running paths along the scenic St. Joseph River.   The East Race is open weekend hours from June through mid-August.
